Applications of UV-C LED disinfection lights

UV-C disinfection lights have been used as early as the mid-20th century, and they remain a popular choice today. With the advancement in lighting technology, UV-C LED lights have dominated the market and can now be found in most indoor and outdoor spaces. UV-C LED lighting as a disinfectant

UV-C is a sub-band of ultraviolet (UV) lighting. With its wavelengths falling in the range of 180nm to 280nm, it has disinfection properties, and UV-C light has the power to kill microbes on non-porous surfaces, in water, and in the atmosphere.

This ability makes it a great disinfectant to efficiently kill viruses, bacteria, and fungi, all of which can infect people and animals and cause widespread diseases.

Benefits of LEDs in UV-C disinfection

There are many benefits to using LEDs in UV-C disinfection lights, contributing to their widespread popularity. This is particularly true of disinfection lights produced by LED iBond, which combine our superior LED technology with each individual LED’s disinfection properties.

LEDs are compact

At only 5mm, UV-C LEDs can be fitted closely together, giving users great flexibility in their arrangement in ventilation and purification systems. Their small size also means they can be used in hand-held disinfection lamps and devices for portable use.

This is a striking benefit compared to traditional UV-C luminaires of mercury lamps, which usually serve as a big device installed within fixtures, or large lamps which cannot be combined with other applications.

LEDs have long service lives

Our LEDs also have a superbly long lifespan of 100,000 continuous hours, thanks to our patented heat management concept, which sandwiches our compact LEDs between two aluminium skins. As aluminium is a good heat conductor, the skins can dissipate heat quickly and prevent overheating problems in disinfection devices.

This can protect the lifespan of LEDs, and the 100,000 continuous hours of our LEDs translate to over a decade of continuous use. This significantly lowers the replacement rate of each lamp, which in turn lowers the overall operating cost.

LEDs disinfect in seconds

Another advantage of UV-C LED lights is that they do not have a preheating period that will require the user to wait for it to warm up. Quite the contrary. LED iBond’s UV-C LED lamps can be turned on and off for immediate use and even disinfect in seconds.

This disinfection efficiency was confirmed by the Korean Standard Test Researcher (KSTR) in 2020. Different bacterial and viral cells on three petri-dishes were exposed to a UV-C LED lamp for 2 seconds at a distance of 1,2cm, and the KSTR has found its sterilizing power averaging 99,8%.

As a result, UV-C LEDs can be used for two main purposes: routine cleaning and deep cleaning, particularly in high-traffic and diverse public places or spaces with vulnerable demographics.

 

Routine cleaning with UV-C

Firstly, UV-C surface disinfection is helpful in high contact environments, such as cash machine screens, gym facilities, escalator handrails, elevator buttons, and stairway bannisters. Lamps can also be used in the home to perform routine cleaning of pet crates and baby areas to maintain a clean environment.

Notably, they can be used in airports, where there is high traffic at all times of the day, and travelers come from all around the world.

 

Case study: UV-C LED disinfection at airports with LED Aviation

LED Aviation is a spin-off of LED iBond International that supplies UV-C disinfection solutions for the aviation industry. With the aim to improve the safety and well-being of all passengers, cabin crew, and ground personnel, LED Aviation is in a joint venture with LED iBond to create disinfection solutions combining UV-C and LED technology.

Adhering to guidelines issued by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to enhance the cleaning and disinfection of frequently touched surfaces in airports, LED Aviation has deployed UV-C LED disinfection lights at security checkpoints.

Features of the airport UV-C LED disinfection lights

The UV-C LED lights are mercury-free and can eliminate up to 99,8% of viruses and bacteria. They are also flexibly designed, and lights can be retrofitted into various installations, such as within different tray return systems, to allow trays to be exposed to irradiation and disinfected.

Thanks to LED iBond’s unique patented ‘sandwich’ structure, in which compact LEDs are placed between the aluminium skins, the lights also come in lightweight panels that are efficient at diffusing heat. This prevents the UV-C LED light panels from overheating when they are in operation at all times of the day at the airport.

The panels can also be installed vertically and horizontally, customized to any length, and even cut diagonally for corner coverage.

With the energy efficiency and durability of LED Aviation’s UV-C LED disinfection lights, airports have saved on electricity consumption and, subsequently, on operational costs, all the while complying with safety guidelines.

 

Deep-cleaning with UV-C

Aside from routine cleaning, deep cleaning is equally important.

For certain spaces that are more prone to the presence of viruses and bacteria and house more vulnerable demographics, such as nursing homes, UV-C LEDs can perform regular and thorough deep-cleaning.

There are two main ways to go about deep cleaning.

Ceiling- and wall-mounted disinfection LEDs

Firstly, disinfection can be done with UV-C LED lights on ceilings and walls indoors.

However, as UV-C LEDs use light, surfaces blocked by objects standing in the way of the light path will not be disinfected. To minimize this issue, users can install multiple UV-C LED light bulbs around the room to maximize exposure.

Still, to ensure a thorough cleaning, manual disinfection should be conducted with portable disinfection lamps and devices.

Hand-held disinfection devices

Hand-held UV-C LEDs can be used not only in deep-cleaning processes around corners and beneath surfaces where open-air UV-C lights cannot reach, but they can also be used on high contact objects.

 

Case study: LED iBond’s handheld disinfection unit PuriZAP

LED iBond has created and manufactured the PuriZAP, a handheld LED UV-C disinfection unit to combat COVID-19, which has wreaked havoc globally since it began spreading in early 2020.

Using LED UV-C light to inactivate the virus, PuriZAP has a success rate of up to 99,97% and can be used for the disinfection of objects and surfaces. This has been confirmed by the Institute of Clinical Research at the University of Southern Denmark, which had worked on a commissioned project on the testing of PuriZAP.

PuriZAP’s features and benefits

PuriZAP distinguishes itself from other disinfection lamps on the market in terms of safety.

Firstly, as a mercury-free unit, the device does not cause any environmental damage when disposed of and will not cause harm in the form of toxic gases when one is accidentally broken.

PuriZAP is also equipped with a spring-loaded safety release, so that the disinfection device is only in use when the user presses the button during operation. Additionally, two LED lights on top of the PuriZAP show when the power is connected and when the UV-C light is active. These features ensure the device never shines unintentionally, as UV-C light can harm the eyes and skin in great intensities and close proximities.

Lastly, each PuriZAP is delivered to the intended user with protective gloves, a UV-C protective face shield, and a safety instruction manual.

Aside from stringent safety measures, PuriZAP is lightweight and ergonomic. Users can hold the device for long periods without experiencing hand strain, and its small size also allows disinfection to take place in all nooks and crannies.

PuriZAP in nursing homes

With the elderly being one of the demographics most vulnerable to viral infections, LED iBond’s spin-off company LED VirusKill has also driven the commercial development of PuriZAP.

So far, there is an agreement on a pilot project in nursing homes in a mid-sized Danish municipality. This project aims to use PuriZAP devices to fight the virus with effective surface disinfection to protect the nation’s most vulnerable.
